There are 11 schools that provide EMT Training in Alaska. Each of these schools is a segment of the University of Alaska and will lead to associate degrees. Internships are inclusive and consist of clinical experiences too. Programs take a maximum of two years to complete successfully, however, some students might be working or have other responsibilities and therefore, an online facility is available.
- It is mandatory for students applying to EMT certification to be 18 years or older.
- Candidate must have completed the EMT course at a state-approved college in Alaska.
- Candidates are required to be physically and mentally fit.
- Candidates must successfully complete a CPR course provided by the National Healthcare Providers of the state.
- The candidates are required to clear the NREMT examination.
- Candidates are required to provide a proof of their national identity.
- The candidate must be well versed in English i.e. speaking, reading and writing English.
- A little background check of the candidate is also essential.
EMT Training Schools.
Ilisagvik College. Offers the EMT Certificate course at the Ilisagvik College in Barrow. Provides students with the option to take a first responder class and then extend to a course that assists in acquiring EMT knowledge. Another option could be, to take a single emergency medical technician course.
Kenai Peninsula College. Located in Soldotna, Kenai Peninsula College has four campus locations and is associated with The University of Alaska Anchorage. The EMT classes at this center cover the three EMT licensing courses, EMT- I, EMT-II and EMT-III. To get into the EMT-II course, students are required to be licensed as an EMT-I. Similarly, for a student to get into EMT-III, he/she must be licensed as an EMT-II first. Students are provided with education on understanding what the victim is going through, assessment and what treatment to provide. You may also gain experience working in emergency rooms and hospitals.
Prince William Sound Community College. It is necessary to receive approval from the instructor or CPR certification for the EMT-I course. This college provides basic training on patient assessments, how to manage traumatic patients and how to handle basic life support (BLS) situations.
University of Alaska Anchorage. Offers classes for EMT-I, EMT-II and EMT-III with an additional emergency trauma technician course. This course is available for first responders working in urban or rural area. Their EMT-I course provides a coursework in victim assessment and observational experiences. The EMT-II course dives deeper into advanced airway treatments while the EMT-III teaches students about medical aid and cardiology. This college also emphasizes that students applying for an EMT course should possess physical and mental strength along with good vision.
University of Alaska Fairbanks. The University of Alaska Fairbanks offers EMT training for each level and also offers an EMT instructor course for students who want to educate others in EMT Training. The center also offers an additional training in Para-medicine, EMT refreshing and emergency trauma training.
University of Alaska Southeast. Situated in Juneau, offers the EMT-I course. This course trains students on how to treat severe trauma, cardiac arrests, fractures, birthing and shock. The course also trains students to be able to lift and move sick patients in an emergency situation. They learn through hands-on training and classroom experiences. Students must possess a CPR certification before they apply for the course.

I have greatly benefited from the online classes and the instructors are of great help through Skype sessions. In a class of very few students, I had an opportunity to speak up and build confidence in asking questions.

This is a great university for both online and classroom sessions. The advisers are very helpful, they send emails of useful deadlines that help me stay up to date, and they also send emails including scholarships.
EMT Training Online – Alaska
Online training is a learning method designed to enable students to work at their own pace and flexibility. It is a great help for students who are working or parenting during the week.
How does it work?
There are 3 parts of the online training. There’s a didactic/informative portion, the hands-on skills portion and clinical rotations.
To register for the course, you will have to choose the skills week that you would like to attend and all online coursework must be done before the hands-on training program.
You will be required to pay the non-refundable $200 registration fee. You will also have to complete a background check and submit copies of your drivers’ license. The application fee is valid for 6 months.

- Provide a copy of your current drivers’ license
- Provide a copy of your high school diploma
- Complete a criminal background check and a drug test.
Are your courses approved by NREMT Certification? YES, our EMT and AEMT courses are approved through the Idaho EMS Bureau and also registered on the NREMT website.
How can students communicate with instructors or ask questions? When a student registers for an EMT course, an instructor’s contact information is shared. The instructor usually provides a response within 24 hours and can even arrange a face to face conferencing or answer questions through email.
Do you accept financial aid or payment plans? We are currently not participating in any financial aid systems, however, we do offer a 0% interest rate payment plan.
How do I keep up and learn information? We have developed a proven curriculum for student success. If you just follow the curriculum and complete all activities as assigned, you’ve nothing to worry about!
It is important for you to dedicate your time to read textbooks, listen to online lectures and complete required quizzes and exams. Review each test and study harder the areas that you need help on.
